Novak SK2X5 Shifter Kit for the Chevy / GM NP231C 5-Bolt Transfer Case

SK2X5

Be sure to also pick a shift knob below — the SK2X5 ships without one.

The SK2X5 is our SK2X direct linkage shifter, built for the Chevy / GM version of the NP231 transfer case — the five-bolt NP231C. It replaces everything from the shift plate at the transfer case right up to the shift knob in the driver's hand, with a transfer case anchor bracket made for the 231C.

It's the right choice for Jeeps without a factory shift handle that a cable shifter can use — YJ Wranglers, CJs and other conversions. If you have an XJ Cherokee or TJ Wrangler and want to keep the factory dog-leg shift handle, see our SK2XC5 cable shifter for the NP231C instead.

Which NP231 Do I Have?

Not sure which one you have? Contact us with your transfer case's tag information or a photo and we'll help you confirm it.

Applications & Compatibility

Compatible Jeeps

Jeep YJ Wranglers, CJs and most other Jeeps and conversions running a Chevy NP231C. For XJ Cherokees and TJ Wranglers that should keep the factory shift handle, use the SK2XC5.

Compatible Transmissions

The anchor bracket mounts to the transfer case itself and is independent of the transmission, so it fits nearly any transmission ahead of the 231C.

Compatible Transfer Case

Chevy / GM NP231C five-bolt transfer cases only. For the Jeep six-bolt NP207, NP231 and NP242, use the SK2X.

Shift Knobs

The shift cane takes a knob with a 3/8-24 fine thread. Pick one from the dropdown above, or see both styles with every engraving option on the SK2X page.

Installation Requirements

Normal hand tools along with a torch are usually all that's required. The SK2X5 installs like our SK2X, whose instructions can be viewed here; only the transfer case anchor bracket is different.

The kit includes an easily bendable mock-up shift cane. Insert it into the shifter bracket and form it by hand to place the top of the shifter where you want it in the Jeep, then use it as the template for bending the real steel cane. If you're uncomfortable bending the cane (typically with heat), the mock-up rod can be taken to a fabricator as the blueprint.

The installer will need some mechanical ability and an understanding of the principles of leverage. If you are uncomfortable with such work, we recommend the services of a skilled mechanic.
