for GM automatics &
chain-drive transfer cases
Which ATF? GM's electronically controlled 4L60E, 4L80E and 6L80E/6L90E take DEXRON-VI. The older hydraulic GM automatics, the TH350, TH400 and 700R4, get DEX/MERC (DEXRON-III / MERCON) ATF. So do the New Process chain-drive transfer cases: the NP208, NP231, NP241 and NP242.

DEXRON-VI / MERCON LV ATF
Valvoline's low-viscosity ATF for the GM DEXRON-VI and Ford MERCON LV specs. This is the fluid for the electronically controlled GM 4L60E, 4L80E and 6L80E/6L90E automatics in our TurnKey transmissions and powertrain packages. A new or rebuilt 4L60E takes about 11 quarts from dry, a 4L80E about 14, and a 6L80E/6L90E about 13. A routine 4L60E pan and filter service takes about 5.
DEX/MERC ATF (DEXRON-III / MERCON)
Valvoline's DEX/MERC multi-vehicle ATF covers the earlier DEXRON-III and MERCON specs. Use it in the hydraulically controlled TH350, TH400 and 700R4. It's also the fluid we use in the New Process chain-drive transfer cases: about 2 quarts for an NP231 or NP242, and 3 for an NP208 or NP241. A full TH350 takes about 10 quarts, a TH400 about 12 and a 700R4 about 11. At those volumes the gallon jug usually saves money.
Adding a Transmission Cooler?
Our auxiliary transmission cooler and its lines hold about 2 extra quarts. Top up with the same ATF your transmission uses.
Filling a Dana 18, 20 or 300 transfer case instead? Those are gear-drive cases and take 80W-90 GL-5 gear oil, not ATF.
