Engine Oil
for
LS Swaps & Classic Small Blocks
Roller or flat tappet? GM's LS Gen III and Gen IV engines use roller lifters and run on 5W-30. A classic small block Chevy with a flat-tappet camshaft needs zinc (ZDDP) in its oil to protect the cam lobes, and modern everyday oils carry far less of it than they used to. That's why we stock a high-zinc 10W-30 for those engines.
5W-30 Motor Oil for LS Engines
The everyday oil for LS Gen III and Gen IV powertrains. An LS oil change with a new filter takes about 6 quarts: grab the 5-quart jug plus one extra quart. That amount also fills the pan after you install a replacement oil level sensor plug.
VR1 High-Zinc 10W-30 for Flat-Tappet Engines
Valvoline VR1 Racing oil carries extra zinc for flat-tappet small block Chevy engines, where the lifters slide directly on the cam lobes. A typical stock-pan small block takes about 5 quarts with a filter; deep and aftermarket pans hold more, so check your dipstick.
