⚙️ Factory Powertrain Overview
Engines
AMC 2.5L I4 — light but underpowered
GM 151 “Iron Duke” — short-lived
AMC 258 I6 — good torque but dated
No V8s offered from the factory during these years
Transmissions
SR4 / T4 / T5 — light duty, not worth keeping
T176 — medium duty, retainable with mild V8s
TF999 automatic — decent, but GM automatics are far better

- Dana 300 — compact, strong, gear-driven, and ideal for GM swaps
→ Adapts easily to most transmissions using Novak kits
🔩 Planning the Powertrain Conversion
Transmission Choice
Skip the SR4, T4, and T5 — they won’t survive GM torque.
If you’ve got a T176, that’s a solid option for moderate builds.
Otherwise, GM automatics or truck 4-speeds are the most proven routes.

Full-size GM cases like the NP205 are bulky, long, and rarely worth the effort in a CJ.
🔋 Engine Selection
Best Fits
Avoid: Big Blocks. They’re heavy, tight-fitting, and overkill for CJ frames.
Rule of thumb: 3.8L minimum, 400 ci maximum.
💨 Fuel Injection vs. Carburetion
Carburetors are simple but outdated.
Modern GM fuel injection delivers better power, efficiency, and reliability.
Avoid converting injected engines back to carbs — you’ll lose more than you gain.
🌎 Emissions
Use an engine that’s the same year or newer than your Jeep.
Retain all emissions components.
Your CJ is classified as a light truck, so most GM donor engines qualify.
Check your local laws for specific rules.
🧠 Salvage Pull Checklist
When pulling your donor drivetrain, get:
Engine (complete with manifolds and sensors)
Accessory brackets (alternator, PS, A/C)
PCM / ECM
Full wiring harness
Matching transmission (especially for 4L60E setups)
Power distribution/relay center if available
⚙️ Engine Placement
Mock up the full engine with manifolds, accessories, and test-fit for:
Most CJ installs offset the engine about 1" to the driver side for steering clearance.

Factory CJ radiators won’t keep up.

Upgrade only for heavy off-road or big-tire builds.
