ZJ swap out of 42re

I trashed my 42RE automatic transmission on a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 6cyl ZJ, and it wasn't hard. I would rather put either a better automatic or convert completely to a manual transmission. However, the transfer case is an NP242. Can anyone tell me about a better transmission for a highway/off-road tank? Would you reuse the 42re? What transmission is the simplest changeover?

Hi George,

For that one, I would suggest the 700R4 automatic or the AX15 manual. Both are great transmissions and adapters are readily available on our website to make them work. The 700R4 would be the simplest over converting to a manual.
